Week 2. Reflective Writing

Friday 15th of February I attended a reflective writing session. During this session I learnt the fundamentals of reflective writing. Luckily I feel quite confident in reflective writing but there is always room for improvement and learning new skills that could help further my writing. Within the creative industry it can be hard to get ideas down in writing, but also in this industry you are bombarded with information and it’s really easy to forget so it’s useful to reflect on situations that have impacted me, small or large. The main idea behind reflective writing is to look back over your thoughts and actions, in my case, over the week and over the sessions I attend. It is self awareness, questioning why I felt that way, why I responded that way, it is an evaluation of yourself, what were my strengths? What were my weaknesses? But also does my work relate to other practitioners? trends? Thinking on a wider context, how does the economy affect my topic? Is it political? environmental?

When reflective writing, the best thing to write about is something your passionate and interested in, why write about something that you are not? Is it related to my work? and is there enough research about that particular topic? After figuring out whether this topic is good to reflect on, I go through a process of selection, picking out different elements that I wish to discuss. Whether I briefly brush over it, or delve further into detail, it is my choice what I decide to reflect on. Often I find that some things can be more important than others or may effect me more than something else might, these are pinnacle events and this helps narrow down what I should reflect on.
